Peer-to-Peer Fundraising Tips

Running a fundraiser takes time, effort, and creativity. While you’ve probably done a great job of sharing your fundraiser link with your social network, there are a few things you can do to jump-start your fundraising efforts. Top 10 tips to help participants with their fundraising ask:

1. Create a Facebook Event for your fundraiser. Invite all of your Facebook friends. You can ask people to share photos, videos, memories, and comments to build engagement. Be sure to post your fundraiser link in the event discription and your donate button on your main organzation Facebook page.

2. Add special rewards to donors. Oftentimes a small perk can help persuade someone to give to your fundraiser. Use your fundraiser description to spell out attractive benefits for potential supporters at certain donation levels.

3. Connect with a local event.  See if event coordinators are interested in promoting your fundraiser along with their event (Mic shout out? Fundraiser signs at the entrance?). Even more out of the box? See if they’ll let you set up a free booth .

4. Team up with a local business.  See if they will offer a fundraising night for your cause in which they donate a percentage of the proceeds to your fundraiser. Another idea would be to see if a coffee or sandwich shop will temporarily name an item after your fundraiser. Think “Daniel’s Dream Deluxe,” or “Cathy’s Battle Cappuccino.” We’ve even seen a great fundraiser organizer team up with a sock company to offer cozy socks as a reward to all donors. Make sure to thank the business in your fundraiser story.

5. Reach out to local media. While sharing with your social network is the most important thing, it can also help to reach out to your local news organizations and blogs to let them know why your fundraiser would interest the community and their readers.

6. Add some competition.  Consider hosting a virtual “sharing contest.” Whoever shares your fundraiser link the most times, or gets the most likes, wins something fun like a poem or musical “Thank You” video posted to Facebook. Go LIVE with your video , engage with viewers, and do shout outs on the video.

7. Share your fundraiser link in Facebook groups.  Remember to focus your post on why your fundraiser means so much to you. Let your readers know the immense power that sharing the fundraiser on social media can have.

8. Step outside of your direct network. Post your fundraiser link on your city’s Facebook page. This is a great way to reach out to local folks you may not know, who might be willing to help your cause by sharing your fundraiser link, donating, or supporting you in other ways.

9. Give your superstars a push. It can be easier to boost a successful fundraiser’s target to raise hundreds more than to get a non-starter to raise $10. Use your reporting tools to find your top-dollar fundraisers and let them know they are a champion and you are here to help them keep going. Treat them like major donors and they will deliver.

10.  Create a fundraiser hashtag.  This is a way to build social media awareness around your fundraiser. Some ideas we’ve loved in the past are #willathewarrior, #reunitethetaylors, and other tags that ignite interest. Use this hashtag across social media.

Support everyone involved with your peer-to-peer fundraising campaign, but at their own level. Different folks will require different types of support, so pay attention and guide your team to ensure great donor acquisition, retention and fundraising amounts to record results.

Fall fundraising ideas seem to always be on the mind of development professionals, regardless of the season. It’s the time of year when nonprofits ramp up their fundraising efforts ahead of the end of year rush, and often the first season in the new fiscal year, meaning the fundraising team is extra enthusiastic about starting the year off new goals.

So, how do you get creative with fall fundraising ideas? Get your supporters and staff involved in peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising for your nonprofit! P2P fundraising means you’re asking individuals — volunteers, board members, staff, donors, whoever! — to reach out to their networks to help raise funds for your organization.

Here are five ways to incorporate peer-to-peer fundraising into your fall fundraising ideas:

1) Take Advantage of the Back to School Spirit

One classic sign of fall is the signal that it’s back to school for students across the world. As schools seek more opportunities to get students engaged in the community, many schools try to incorporate volunteerism into their curriculum. But, if your nonprofit is small or has limited volunteer opportunities, this may leave you excluded from receiving their support.

However, there’s a ripe opportunity here to get creative and encourage P2P fundraising among classes or schools in your region. Ask them to compete to raise the most funds in a team fundraiser, with a leaderboard to showcase who has the most “philanthropic spirit.” Also, remind school administrators that P2P fundraising is more cost-effective for them, and still teaches students the same great tenants about civic duty. Make it fun by hosting social media contests:  Consider non-tangible prizes, like a field trip to your animal shelter or a visit from your executive director, as prizes for the winning fundraisers.

2) Don’t Forget Fall Food Festivals

Nothing rings in the fall season quite like the smell of fresh-baked apple pie and pumpkin bread. There is no shortage of bake sales and cook-offs to help you get creative with your fall fundraising ideas.

Have you considered a virtual bake sale? Or, encourage your favorite chefs to have a “fall soup” competition, with donors voting by donating to their favorite soup fundraiser on a team leaderboard. Labor Day, Columbus Day, Halloween, Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving all occur back-to-back in the fall months. For Halloween, consider a virtual haunted house – encourage P2P fundraisers to design their dream “haunted house” and get donors to vote by donating to their favorite fundraiser. Then, let the winner turn your warehouse or office into a haunted house. “Charge” admission by asking haunted house visitors to donate to your team’s general fund when they arrive for the haunted house.

Your organization likely has changing needs in the fall as the weather gets colder. You may need a new heating system at the animal shelter. Or, you may need warmer coats or blankets for clients at your homeless shelter.  Whatever your needs are, P2P fundraising can amplify your messaging.

Let your individual fundraisers know about time-specific needs. Ask them to fundraise using a personal story, like a family that needs coats. Most people donate because they feel an emotional tie. So, encourage supporters to personalize stories as much as possible.

“Small groups.” “Small gatherings.” “Harvest dinners.” Whatever you call them, your organization has likely considered these before to bring together groups of supporters in an intimate setting to raise funds for your nonprofit.
